Last Tuesday I attended an event which hosted CIA Director John Brennan as guest speaker. He spoke about the 113 stars carved in the Alabama marble in the lobby of the CIA headquarters. Each star represents A CIA employee who died in the line of service. He asked the crowd of mostly wealthy people to consider contributing to the foundation that helps the families of these brave men. I just couldn't help but feeling uncomfortable. I respect the 113 men who died in the line of duty to this country, but it was difficult to hear Mr. Brennan talk about how the CIA treats it's employees like family, and how much they truly care for those who work for the organization. There are so many people who were hired by the CIA (hence "employees") like the Cuban-exiles in the Congo and Bay of Pigs, and countless others, who have also died in the line of duty, who will never have a star, and whose families will never be the beneficiary of a foundation.
Being at this event gave me a fresh burst of energy and motivated me to continue to try to do everything I can in order to tell the story of the CIA operation in the Congo, so at least we can shed some light on a very complicated piece of US and Congolese history, which caused the death of countless foreign nationals, as well as thousands of Congolese people. Not to mention the collateral damage to the families of all of those involved.
As many of you know, we have finished the filming portion of our documentary "A Secret Legacy," and in a couple of months we will be rolling out a crowd funding campaign on social media in order to raise the funds to pay for the editing of our film.
