Picture it: Cuban exiles, hired by the CIA, fighting communism in Africa’s Congo. Sounds like a crazy Hollywood plot, right? But it’s a true story — one you can help bring to completion. The incredible story of men taking on communism is the center of the documentary A Secret Legacy: Cuban Exiles, the CIA and the Congo Crisis. The film, sponsored by the nonprofit Independent Filmmaker Project, was directed by Sandra Alvarez-Smith, who has close ties to the story — her grandfather was one of the veterans involved in the crisis. The film’s team will host a fundraiser for the A Secret Legacy this Thursday at the CubaOcho Art and Research Center (1465 SW Eighth St., Miami). The event, sponsored by Matusalem Rum, aims to be a fun night out for arts supporters. From 7 to 10 p.m., attendees can watch a “top-secret” screening, listen to live Cuban music by Miami Son and El Ritmo Alonso, enjoy drinks and appetizers, and enter to win raffle prizes from local vendors.
